Azerbaijani to Hausa: agreement, event structure and what mine refers to

Azerbaijani gender-neutral reference does not determine Hausa noun agreement

Azerbaijani lacks a grammatical masculine/feminine noun-gender system and uses o for he, she or it. Hausa assigns nouns to masculine or feminine gender, including nouns for inanimate things. A target reference to an object therefore needs the noun’s grammatical pattern rather than a guess based on its owner.

For an Azerbaijani message describing a missing item, select the Hausa noun and check the referring forms that belong to it. A feminine grammatical category does not imply that the item is owned by a woman, and a masculine category does not identify a male owner. Endings provide tendencies rather than a universal test: the Hausa grammar lists exceptions. If the source changes the item being described, reconsider its target agreement rather than leaving the previous noun’s personal reference in place.

Completed and continuing actions are not simply past and present labels

Azerbaijani verbal suffixes express time and other grammatical information in a different arrangement from Hausa. Hausa commonly marks aspect through subject-pronoun forms, and its completive and continuative constructions should not be treated as automatic equivalents of past and present.

Sun sha shayi means they drank tea in an ordinary completed-event reading, while suna shan shayi means they are drinking tea in an ongoing-event reading. For an Azerbaijani update about guests, determine whether the drinking is over or underway before choosing the Hausa construction. A time expression such as yesterday can locate an event without making every event at that time completed. Likewise, an event described as complete is not defined only by being earlier than the moment of speaking. Preserve the source’s event structure alongside its stated time, rather than transferring a tense ending’s name into a target choice without examining the action.

The Hausa form of mine can identify the thing owned

Azerbaijani possessive suffixes identify the possessor on the noun. Hausa independent possessive forms can also reflect the grammatical gender of the understood possession. Nawa and tawa both mean mine, with masculine and feminine possession respectively. The speaker remains the owner in both.

For an Azerbaijani response identifying which item belongs to the writer, do not choose between these forms by the writer’s sex. Recover the object being discussed and its Hausa grammatical gender. If the conversation moves from one item to another, the appropriate independent possessive may change even though ownership does not. Conversely, a change of owner must still be expressed when the object remains the same. Keep these decisions separate from the subject-pronoun forms in the tea examples: identifying who acts and identifying whose object is understood are different grammatical jobs. A short target answer can rely on earlier context, but that context must point to the same possession as the Azerbaijani source.
