Azerbaijani to Haitian Creole: move information out of endings without losing it

A shorter target verb is not missing its person

Azerbaijani verbs can contain person, tense, and negation in one word. Haitian Creole generally expresses these relationships through subject pronouns and particles around a main verb that does not conjugate in the same way. The translator must unpack the Azerbaijani form rather than search for an equally long target verb.

Azerbaijani oxuyuram means I read, while oxumuram means I do not read in the teaching examples. The negative information sits inside the source word. In Haitian Creole it needs the appropriate negative construction, with a separately recoverable speaker. A target main verb left unchanged is normal; omitting the negation because the root looks positive is an error.

The teaching example M ap pale expresses an ongoing act of speaking, with ap contributing to the action’s presentation. Match the Azerbaijani clause’s intended timing and ongoingness before selecting such a particle. A habitual statement about language use is not necessarily the same assertion as speaking at the moment.

Possession moves to the other side of the noun

Azerbaijani mənim bacım identifies my sister through a possessor expression and a suffix on the kinship noun. Haitian Creole can place a pronoun after a noun to mark ownership. The documented chat li means his or her cat, illustrating why target order may differ without reversing the ownership relationship.

Azerbaijani onun is neutral between his and her, and Haitian Creole li likewise covers he, she, and it. This is a point where the translation can preserve the source’s lack of a sex distinction. There is no reason to invent separate male and female target pronouns to resemble another intermediary language.

The same Haitian pronoun can serve as subject or object depending on its position. Azerbaijani case endings help identify roles differently. When a message mentions a relative and another person helping that relative, establish who helps whom before reorganizing the clause; repeating the correct pronoun letters does not guarantee that the roles survived.

Number and identifiable objects need separate checking

Azerbaijani kitablar visibly marks a plural noun. Haitian Creole nouns do not take a corresponding plural suffix: a number or another element can convey quantity. The teaching contrast Li gen youn sak and Li gen twa sak keeps sak unchanged while distinguishing one bag from three. A translated packing list should preserve its quantities without manufacturing target noun endings.

Haitian Creole also places definite marking after the noun, with yo used for definite plurals. Azerbaijani has no matching article system. Do not attach yo automatically to every source plural: whether the objects are already identified is a distinct question from whether there is more than one.

For an Azerbaijani message about bringing someone’s bags, check the owner, the quantity, and whether the bags are the particular ones already discussed. These three facts can occupy very different places in the Haitian Creole wording. A faithful translation may have fewer suffixes and more separate words while expressing all three relationships more clearly.
