Azerbaijani negative messages and Finnish person marking

The negative itself can identify the person

Azerbaijani negative predicates combine the action or identity with their own morphology. Finnish uses an inflected negative verb in ordinary present negative constructions. The target person distinction can therefore appear in a separate word rather than in the same source position.

The Aalto lesson contrasts “en puhu”, I do not speak, with “emme puhu”, we do not speak. The main verb form is the same in these examples, while the negative changes. A source switch from mən to biz should remain a switch from the individual to a group.

For an Azerbaijani message saying that the team does not speak a language, do not reuse a Finnish first-person singular negative merely because the writer personally types it. The source represents the group. Conversely, several colleagues mentioned elsewhere do not turn an individual statement into we.

A number can require a singular-looking target noun

The Finnish counting example “kaksi tomaattia” identifies two tomatoes. The noun is in a partitive form in this construction rather than an ordinary nominative plural. A target form that lacks the expected plural-looking ending does not necessarily lose the count.

Azerbaijani also has its own numeral-noun construction, but the resemblance that a noun may not look like a general plural is insufficient to predict the Finnish ending. The target numeral construction determines the appropriate case.

For a shopping request, keep each number linked to the actual item. Two containers and two measures of their contents are different quantities. A correct numeral cannot repair a target noun phrase that counts the wrong unit.

Case systems need different suffix choices

Azerbaijani case endings and Finnish local cases can both express location and movement, but their inventories and uses are not identical. A source ending meaning movement toward a place is not converted by appending one fixed Finnish syllable to every destination.

The Finnish local-case reference explains target location patterns and vowel harmony. The noun selected for the place matters, and its suffix form must fit the target word. Azerbaijani vowel harmony offers a familiar broad concept without supplying the Finnish vowel pattern.

In a source instruction distinguishing being at an office from going to it, preserve that difference before comparing target spelling. A name that changes ending can still identify the same office in a new grammatical relationship.

A source he or she need not emerge from an unmarked pronoun

Azerbaijani o does not identify sex by itself, and Finnish “hän” likewise does not divide ordinary personal reference into separate he and she forms. An unchanged target pronoun is not a failure to preserve source gender that the source never stated.

Where several people occur in a message, retain the names or roles needed to distinguish their actions. Sex-neutral reference still requires a clear antecedent.

For this direction, check the negative verb’s person, the noun form after a quantity and the distinction between a location and destination. Those decisions explain target changes that a source-suffix substitution would miss.
