Azerbaijani to Estonian: reporting work in progress and finished work

An object ending can affect the reported result

Both Azerbaijani and Estonian use noun case, but their object systems do not match ending for ending. Azerbaijani has an accusative form; Estonian objects can appear in the partitive, genitive, or nominative. Recognizing a definite object in Azerbaijani does not by itself tell you which Estonian form the sentence needs.

Estonian object choice can help distinguish an activity from an action reaching its endpoint. A report that somebody worked on a document is different from a report that they finished it. Supply that distinction in Azerbaijani before translating, especially when the recipient must decide whether to continue the work or deliver the result.

For an editing update, separate ‘I checked some pages’ from ‘I checked the entire document’. Identify any pages still awaiting attention. The distinction is not simply whether the document is familiar to the reader: a well-known document can still be only partly checked. Keeping the extent of the task explicit helps avoid an unjustified completion claim in Estonian.

Negative reports need a fresh grammatical construction

Estonian uses a partitive object in a negative clause. Consequently, turning a positive report into a negative one can change the object’s form as well as the verb construction. Do not create an Estonian correction by inserting a negative word into an earlier positive translation and leaving everything else untouched.

Azerbaijani can express negation within a verb’s suffix sequence. Estonian commonly uses separate negative elements such as ei. A greater number of written words in the target is therefore not evidence that the translator added a new action or participant. Compare the complete negative predicate with the source meaning.

Distinguish a task that was not started from one that was started but not finished. For example, an Azerbaijani update about an unfinished translation should say whether a draft exists. Otherwise, an Estonian reader may understand only that no completed translation is available, without knowing whether to wait for revisions or assign the job elsewhere.

Read the Estonian action across intervening words

Estonian multiword verbs can have components separated by other words. Their meaning may depend on the combination rather than on the main verb alone. Do not discard a short word at the end of a sentence because the main action appears to have been translated earlier.

This matters when comparing a work update with an Azerbaijani source whose verb comes late. The Estonian result need not preserve that exact order. Follow the action and its related words through the clause, then check who performed it and what result is asserted.

For a useful final check, divide the update into completed work, remaining work, and the next promised action. Each category should have an identifiable counterpart in the Estonian text. If you revise completion status, translate that entire clause again: the relevant change may involve the object ending, the negative construction, and the wording of the action together.
