Azerbaijani to Croatian: identify the owner before choosing svoj

Possession changes when the owner is the subject

Azerbaijani possession can mark the owner in a genitive expression and the possessed noun with a suffix. Croatian distinguishes ordinary possessive expressions from reflexive svoj when something belongs to the grammatical subject. A translation therefore needs to establish who owns the item, not simply replace an Azerbaijani possessive ending with a word meaning his or her.

The Croatian Institute illustrates On ima svoju knjigu for someone having his own book. Its contrasting On ima njegovu knjigu can mean that the subject has another man’s book. This difference is practical in a handover message: an Azerbaijani reference to a book or document must not accidentally assign the property to someone else in Croatian.

Azerbaijani onun is not marked male or female. Croatian choices can introduce gender information about an owner, while svoj identifies the subject as owner instead. First decide whether the source refers back to the person performing the action; only then decide which possessive construction preserves that relationship.

Respectful you needs the right written treatment

Azerbaijani siz can respectfully address one person. Croatian also distinguishes familiar and respectful address, and its orthography specifies capitals in polite direct address to an individual. This is a useful parallel, but the source ending does not by itself tell whether a message is a personal letter or a notice addressed to several people.

Croatian orthographic guidance uses Vi and Vaš for respectful address to a particular individual, while ordinary plural reference is written lowercase. When translating an Azerbaijani customer email, establish whether the message is for one customer or a whole team before choosing capitalization. Capital letters should reflect the relationship rather than serve as decorative emphasis.

Azerbaijani Sizin adınız nədir? is documented as a formal question asking someone’s name. A Croatian version must maintain that courteous encounter through its own pronoun, verbal construction, and written convention. There is no need to make the target sound like a group questionnaire simply because the Azerbaijani address resembles a plural form.

Keep grammatical roles when reshaping the clause

Azerbaijani noun endings distinguish relationships such as destination, location, and ownership. Croatian also inflects nouns and associated words, but the required case depends on the Croatian expression. Choosing the target noun’s dictionary form alone leaves important information untranslated; copying the source suffix category without checking the Croatian construction is equally unreliable.

Gender agreement adds another difference. Azerbaijani has no noun gender, whereas Croatian descriptions require appropriate agreement. If a source refers to a specific person through o, the surrounding exchange may supply information needed for the target pronoun or description. Do not use the apparent gender of an occupation as evidence about the individual.

In a Croatian translation of an Azerbaijani collection instruction, read the finished sentence for two ownership questions: who should collect the item, and whose item is being collected? Then verify respectful address and case. These checks catch changes that a smooth target sentence can conceal, especially when njegov and svoj would both look plausible to a reader checking only the word book.
