Assamese to Yucatec Maya: habitual action, possession and counted people

A repeated activity is different from what is happening now

Assamese verbal constructions express time and event structure through forms that do not match Yucatec Maya word for word. The target needs a construction appropriate to whether the source describes a habit or an action currently in progress. A recognisable verb root does not settle that distinction.

The university lesson contrasts kin k’aay, I sing as a habitual activity, with tin k’aay, I am singing. For an Assamese message about someone’s daily practice, choose the habitual meaning rather than reporting that singing is underway at the moment of writing. Conversely, an update from an event should not be weakened into a general statement about what the person usually does. Keep the source’s actual event interpretation before choosing the target markers; changing one small form can change what the recipient believes is happening now.

The owner is expressed in a different position and pattern

Yucatec Maya possessive constructions use forms before the possessed noun. The teaching paradigm includes in for my, a for your and u for his or her. These belong to a possessive construction and should not be confused with a freely interchangeable set of independent subject pronouns.

When an Assamese message identifies a relative’s possession, keep the owner distinct from the person carrying or receiving it. A source sentence can mention all three in one exchange. Do not choose the target owner merely because a particular person was last named. Assamese personal reference also carries honorific distinctions that require interpretation independently of ownership: a respectful reference to the recipient does not turn the writer’s item into the recipient’s item. Establish which relationship each source expression encodes before selecting the Yucatec form. If the source changes from my document to your document, revise the possessive phrase as a unit instead of altering a nearby name alone.

Shared classifier use does not mean shared counting categories

Assamese uses classifiers in nominal expressions, and Yucatec Maya also has numeral classifiers. Their categories and forms still need individual choices. The norm illustrates juntúul máak, one person, and ka’atúul máak, two people. The target counting expression identifies the referents and their number together.

For an Assamese notice about how many people can attend, preserve the exact headcount before selecting the Yucatec construction. A source classifier’s resemblance in function does not establish that the same target classifier works for people, books and portions of food. Keep any contrast between participants and their belongings explicit in the interpretation. The apostrophe and accented vowels in the examples also belong to their spelling; they should not be stripped away to make the Latin text look simpler. A correct numeral with the wrong classified item can still misstate the invitation. Check the counted group against the Assamese source and keep it separate from grammatical person and the owner of any item mentioned alongside it.
