Assamese to Tigrinya: addressing a respected visitor without changing the facts

A respectful form may refer to one person

Tigrinya polite pronoun forms are historically plural, and plural-related forms can express respect toward one person. Maria Bulakh’s grammatical description documents this distinction. A translation that looks plural to a learner does not necessarily mean several visitors are being addressed.

Assamese also distinguishes respectful address, but its honorificity and grammatical number are separate features. Preserve both the relationship and the actual headcount in an arrival message. A respectful request to one visitor should remain about that person, while arrangements for their companions should identify the companions separately.

If a service team needs the number of seats or meals, state it explicitly. Do not expect the courtesy form in either language to provide a reliable passenger count on its own.

The person addressed and the person mentioned are different roles

Tigrinya pronouns and attached person references distinguish gender and number. Bulakh describes related references attached to nouns, prepositions, and verbs. A phrase can therefore identify an owner or recipient in a part of the word that an Assamese reader does not immediately recognize.

For an enquiry about a visitor’s belongings, name the owner, the person receiving the message, and the person who should bring the item. A respectful form aimed at the recipient must not accidentally be interpreted as identifying the owner.

Translate the complete revised sentence if responsibility changes. Replacing only the visible personal name may leave attached references pointing to the previous participant. This is especially important when a message originally written by a visitor is adapted into a reply from the host.

A regional spelling difference is not automatically an error

Bulakh distinguishes Eritrean and Ethiopian standard varieties of Tigrinya, with notable differences in spelling and vocabulary. If the intended readers have a particular regional background, preserve that context when preparing the message. An unfamiliar spelling should be checked before it is replaced with a form familiar from another variety.

Tigrinya uses Ethiopic writing, but shared letter shapes do not make it Amharic. Do not borrow a remembered Amharic expression as a correction merely because the script looks similar. Keep Tigrinya selected through revisions and preserve the written result as text.

For an established personal name, retain the spelling used by the person or booking record beside the translated explanation. A new approximation should not replace the identifier staff must match when the visitor arrives.

Make the welcome useful beyond its opening

A welcome should tell the visitor what to do next. Include the meeting point, time, contact person, and whether an answer is required. Put those practical instructions into complete Assamese sentences so the translation has enough context to identify the actors.

Keep a request for confirmation separate from a confirmed arrangement. Asking whether a visitor can come at a certain time does not establish that they have agreed. Save the later acceptance separately once it arrives.

Before sending, check the visitor, companions, host, belongings, and next action. Preserve reference codes exactly. Save the successful message with its audience and relationship, then translate again if a new visitor takes the place of the original recipient; courteous wording and attached references may both need attention.
