Assamese obligations and Swedish negative scope

Not needing to act differs from needing not to act

An Assamese message concerning a task can say that somebody is not obliged to do it or that somebody must avoid doing it. These readings lead to different Swedish instructions. The target negative should be interpreted with the modal expression, not checked as an isolated counterpart of the source negative.

Swedish “måste inte” can express absence of necessity in an appropriate context. A reader should not be expected to infer a prohibition merely from those two words. The Swedish Academy grammar distinguishes how modal meaning and negation interact, making the whole clause important.

For an Assamese workplace instruction, determine whether the writer releases a colleague from a task or forbids the task. Both can lead to inaction, but they give different permissions. Preserve any source explanation that establishes which interpretation is intended.

A reported negative changes position

Compare ordinary main-clause “han kommer inte” with subordinate “att han inte kommer”. These express a negative coming event in different clause environments. The target negative can move relative to the finite verb without moving to another proposition.

Assamese normally organises its predicate and negation through different patterns. A report that somebody said a colleague would not come should retain the negative inside the reported information. It should not turn into a denial that the reporting event occurred.

The Swedish language institute describes both the basic subordinate pattern and environments where main-clause order occurs in certain subordinate clauses. The comparison here is a practical starting point, not a claim that every occurrence of att must force one rigid sequence in all usage.

Target grammatical gender does not name the source person’s sex

Swedish noun phrases distinguish common and neuter grammatical patterns. Assamese does not provide a matching gender label for every object through its classifiers. Selecting a Swedish noun can consequently require target article or modifier choices that cannot be inferred from a source human or object classifier.

If an Assamese instruction changes from one kind of document to another, inspect the target noun phrase after the vocabulary change. The person responsible for the task can remain the same while the noun’s grammatical requirements change.

Also keep number separate. An Assamese source request mentioning several items should not be evaluated by looking only for a translated numeral. The target noun and its dependent words need to describe the same quantity.

Source courtesy must survive the intended instruction

Assamese respectful address such as আপুনি establishes a relationship with the listener. Swedish does not reproduce the same pronoun-and-agreement ladder through a fixed one-word substitution. The target wording should preserve whether the source politely requests, permits or firmly prohibits an action.

A courteous-looking Swedish opening cannot compensate for a modal construction that changes permission. Read the task statement with its explanation and the intended listener in view.

Before sending, identify what is compulsory, what is optional and which negative proposition is being reported. Then check the target noun phrase for the item involved. These decisions preserve the practical meaning that an Assamese instruction can lose through literal modal or word-order transfer.
