Assamese to Samoan: include the right people and keep the written register

A group reference should make membership clear

Samoan distinguishes inclusive and exclusive first-person reference. The Peace Corps course contrasts tātou, including the people addressed, with mātou, excluding them. An Assamese message about “our” plan therefore needs more context than the general idea of a first-person group.

For an invitation, establish whether the reader is joining the activity or merely hearing about what the speaker’s group will do. A wrong Samoan choice can turn an announcement into an invitation or make a shared plan sound excluding. Include the preceding Assamese sentence if it identifies the intended participants.

Group size also matters because Samoan distinguishes dual forms from larger groups. Do not select a general plural simply because the Assamese uses a plural expression. Recover the actual pair or group before judging the target construction.

Written Samoan does not have to copy casual pronunciation

The Ministry for Pacific Peoples orthography guide distinguishes the conventional written t-style from k-style pronunciation used in many spoken settings. Its example contrasts written tama with spoken kama for “child” or “boy.” This is not a reason to edit all conventional written forms to match an informal pronunciation.

An Assamese speaker preparing a written message should preserve the target’s established spelling. A friend may pronounce a word differently from what the translator displays without either form representing a different person or object. Keep spoken pronunciation notes separate from the text the recipient will read.

The same guide explains short and long vowels and the use of macrons. Practices differ across communities and publications, but a learner should not remove a macron merely as visual cleanup. Where the output supplies one, retain it unless a known recipient convention gives a specific reason for another written form.

Respectful source information needs its conversational purpose

Assamese can encode honorificity in pronouns, verb agreement, kinship expressions, and human classifiers. The target should preserve appropriate social treatment without turning every source respectful element into an invented title or family relationship.

Bharadwaj’s Assamese research also notes that honorific agreement can be shared across singular and plural subjects. Thus respect does not establish the number of people included in a Samoan group reference. Resolve audience size and group membership separately from the level of courtesy.

For a final review, read the Samoan as a message to the actual recipient: who is included in the plan, how many people are involved, and what relationship is conveyed by the address? Then inspect the copied spelling. This direction requires all those checks because Assamese social agreement can leave number unresolved, while Samoan pronouns and writing conventions express distinctions in different places. A familiar-sounding spoken form is useful background, but it does not replace accurate written reference to the intended people.
