Assamese owners and Northern Kurdish past events

The owner can be the person acting

Assamese can identify an owner through a possessive expression, while Northern Kurdish distinguishes a possession belonging to the clause’s own subject from one belonging to somebody else. An Assamese sentence about taking a document must therefore be interpreted for ownership as well as for the action.

The Kurmanji reference grammar’s “kitêba min” names my book. “kitêba xwe” instead identifies the book as belonging to the relevant subject. The latter is not a permanently masculine possessive and does not invariably mean the writer’s own book.

If an Assamese report says that a colleague collected their own document, the target relationship differs from a report that the colleague collected the writer’s document. A recognisable word for book or document cannot establish the correct owner. Keep that distinction visible when the source changes from one person’s action to another’s.

A past actor may use an oblique form

Kurmanji past transitive clauses have a participant pattern that differs from ordinary present direct-case subject constructions. The grammar illustrates “min ew dît” for I saw him in its stated context. The first-person oblique form identifies the observer rather than a person receiving the act of seeing.

Assamese has its own case and agreement relationships. Its source actor cannot be located in the target merely by looking for whichever pronoun resembles a familiar present-tense subject. Establish who saw, took or found the item, and who or what was affected.

This also affects reflexive ownership. In the relevant past transitive construction, a reflexive possessive can refer back to the logical agent. A target noun phrase’s visible case does not justify moving ownership to some other participant. Analyse the event before judging the possessive.

Respect does not replace grammatical gender

Assamese respectful reference can avoid some sex distinctions made by familiar pronouns, and human classifiers can signal social reference. Kurmanji grammatical gender and oblique forms belong to a different system. A source respectful marker is not an instruction to assign one fixed target gender or case.

For a report involving two people, preserve their identities through the actions and possessions rather than repeatedly choosing a target form from the same short glossary entry. If the source does not establish information needed by a target construction, the surrounding exchange is more useful than guessing from a person’s status.

Northern Kurdish is the requested language variety

The examples here are Latin-script Kurmanji, or Northern Kurdish. Central Kurdish, often called Sorani, differs in important grammatical and writing practices. An Assamese sentence translated into Sorani and then respelled with Latin letters is not a substitute for Northern Kurdish.

Preserve the marked letters in the target examples rather than treating them as decorative accents. They belong to the written forms. Assamese spelling habits do not determine which target vowel letters can be dropped.

For a short past-event report, check the logical actor, the affected item and whether that item belongs to the actor or another person. These relationships are the main safeguards against an apparently fluent target that changes the Assamese account.
