Assamese to Kashmiri: ownership endings do different grammatical work

Identify the owner before interpreting agreement

Assamese kinship expressions can cross-reference the person of the possessor on the relative noun. Kashmiri also uses possessive marking, but the Surrey grammar report explains that its genitive marker agrees in gender and number with the head noun. A change in the target marker therefore need not mean that the owner changed.

For a family introduction, first recover whose parent, sibling, or child is being discussed. Then examine the Kashmiri noun phrase as a whole. Do not read a target gender or number change as a direct replacement for an Assamese personal suffix: the two systems can distribute information differently.

This is useful when the same person owns or is related to several differently classified nouns. Keep the owner fixed in your meaning check while allowing Kashmiri agreement to follow its target construction. Conversely, a plausible agreement pattern does not prove that the translation selected the correct owner.

A changed stem can be the ordinary plural

The Surrey report illustrates gobur, “child,” with plural gobar. It also documents case forms and other stem changes. An Assamese reader should therefore not expect every Kashmiri plural to be formed by attaching an easily separable suffix to an unchanged dictionary form.

For a message about several children or requested items, verify quantity and reference before making spelling edits. A target stem that looks different may be correctly inflected; a familiar stem may still carry the wrong case. Inspect the complete phrase and its role in the sentence rather than accepting or rejecting it by resemblance alone.

Assamese honorific agreement can be shared by singular and plural subjects. That means a respectful source verb is not sufficient evidence of how many people are involved. Retain the source noun phrase or known context that establishes number before checking the Kashmiri plural.

Shared regional vocabulary does not imply shared sentence structure

The CIIL Kashmiri course highlights its distinctive sentence structure and pronominalization, in which verbal forms can encode pronoun information. Assamese also packages personal information in its own constructions, but the positions and functions should not be copied mechanically.

For an instruction involving an actor and a recipient, identify both in the Assamese first. Then check whether the Kashmiri verbal and nominal forms preserve those roles. A shorter target sentence is not necessarily missing a pronoun, and a longer one is not necessarily adding a participant.

Kashmiri is encountered in Perso-Arabic and Devanagari writing, as the CIIL course notes. Preserve the script required by the actual recipient rather than assuming regional familiarity makes either equally usable. When checking the written result, recover the same owner, count, actor, and recipient. This direction benefits from those specific checks because a change in stem or possessive form can reflect legitimate Kashmiri grammar while an unnoticed personal-reference error changes the family relationship or instruction itself.
