Assamese to Hausa: distinguishing a finished task from work still in progress

Look beside the action word for its status

Hausa expresses important verbal distinctions through forms associated with the subject before the main verb. A translation can therefore change from a completed event to an ongoing activity while retaining a recognizable action word. Do not check a work update by finding only the dictionary equivalent of the Assamese verb.

UCLA’s examples contrast Sun sha shayi, “They drank tea,” with Suna shan shayi, “They are drinking tea.” The difference involves the construction as a whole. These are teaching examples, not ready-made phrases to adapt by substituting any work-related noun.

For an Assamese report about preparing a room or delivering materials, state whether the work is finished, underway, or planned. A colleague deciding whether to use the room needs that status. A sentence that merely identifies the right activity can still lead them to arrive too early.

Time and completion are separate questions

The Hausa grammar explicitly warns against treating its completive as simply “past” or its continuative as simply “present.” Time expressions and context help locate the event. Preserve a source date, “tomorrow,” or “earlier today” rather than assuming a grammatical label makes it redundant.

When reporting a scheduled task, distinguish the time of the plan from the time of the action. “We agreed yesterday to deliver tomorrow” contains two events. Split the Assamese source into two sentences if a compact message leaves unclear which date belongs to which event.

If an update changes from a plan to a result, generate a new translation. Changing only the date in an earlier saved sentence may preserve a construction that still describes intention instead of completion.

Keep a negative report intact

UCLA presents different negative patterns for a completed tea-drinking event and an ongoing tea-drinking activity. These patterns are not formed by applying one fixed arrangement to every sentence. Do not remove or add a final negative word according to a rule copied from a different construction.

In a practical update, “not delivered” and “not delivering now” do not necessarily make the same claim. Preserve a qualification such as “not yet” or a reason for delay when the Assamese message includes it. State the next expected action separately so the negative report does not conceal the proposed solution.

Respect does not identify the whole work group

Assamese honorificity and number are separate grammatical features. A respectful question to one colleague can coexist with a report about several workers. Identify the question’s recipient and the action’s subject separately before judging the Hausa pronoun choices.

If two teams are mentioned, replace an ambiguous repeated “they” with the relevant team name in your own source draft. Keep a quoted original separate from that clarification. A recipient should be able to tell which team finished and which team is still working.

Save the complete translated update with its event time and status. On reuse, check the actual actor, task, and completion claim before sending. This preserves the distinction the Hausa construction expresses instead of reducing the memory to a familiar-looking action word.
