Assamese to Luganda: noun classification reaches beyond the noun

A source classifier is not the same thing as Luganda concord

Assamese nominal expressions use classifiers, but Luganda noun classes govern patterns of agreement across a sentence. The existence of classification in both languages does not make their categories interchangeable. Translating an Assamese noun correctly is only part of forming the Luganda phrase around it.

Compare Ekitabo kizitowa, the book is heavy, with Ebitabo bizitowa, the books are heavy. The change from one book to several affects the noun and its associated verb form. An Assamese source classifier may help establish that individual books are being counted, but it does not predict the target ki- and bi- agreement. For a parcel description, preserve whether the writer means one heavy book or several heavy books before selecting the Luganda construction.

The same issue appears when a source description is revised from a book to another kind of object. A target modifier or reference that fitted the original noun may need to change with the new noun class. Do not leave an Assamese-shaped frame and swap only the target noun inside it. In a request to collect a particular item, class agreement helps the reader connect later descriptions with that item. Check which noun each descriptive or referring form belongs to, especially when the Assamese passage mentions both the parcel and its contents. A classifier’s presence in the source does not supply all those target connections.

The respectful person and the grammatical person remain separate decisions

Assamese has multiple honorific levels in its personal pronouns and verbs; its honorific verbal agreement does not simply encode singular versus plural number. An elevated source form can address one recipient, while a familiar form can refer to a real group. Resolve the actual participants before choosing Luganda personal constructions.

The Luganda teaching phrase Nze nva mu Amerika means I come from America. Nze identifies the speaker, and the verb belongs to that first-person reference. An Assamese sentence asking where the recipient comes from cannot keep the same target personal form simply because both sentences concern origins. Similarly, a statement identifying a third person’s home must remain about that person rather than the reader. Source respect and target grammatical person answer different questions.

For an Assamese introduction to a host, keep three roles distinct: the writer presenting themselves, the host being addressed, and any companion being introduced. A polite tone does not merge those roles. Luganda lessons practise changing the personal reference together with the associated verb, rather than treating a pronoun as a detachable courtesy label. Preserve that connection when a source message moves from I to you and then to a named companion. The result should let the host identify who comes from which place without having to reconstruct the Assamese wording.
