Assamese group reference and Dari personal messages

The source first-person group must remain a group

Assamese আমি means we, while মই means I. A short message about arriving or collecting something should therefore be read for number before a Dari personal ending is selected. The person operating the translator is not necessarily the only person represented in the source.

The Dari learner grammar writes first-person singular “من” and first-person plural “ما”. These distinguish the individual speaker from the group. They should not be selected according to how many people appear elsewhere in the message; the question is who performs the stated action.

If an Assamese writer reports that the group has arrived but that one colleague is still travelling, preserve both references. Collapsing them into one participant can change an arrangement even when the target contains the right arrival and travel vocabulary.

Third-person reference does not require a male-versus-female pronoun

Dari “او” can refer to he or she. Assamese respectful তেওঁ can also leave sex unspecified where familiar source forms distinguish it differently. In this direction, an unchanged target pronoun does not by itself indicate that a male and a female participant have been confused.

For a message involving two colleagues, determine which person each source sentence concerns. If both would otherwise be represented by the same target pronoun, preserve a necessary name or role. The absence of a male-versus-female pronoun distinction makes the connection to the source participants particularly important.

Do not invent sex information merely to make the translation resemble an English explanation. The useful requirement is that the same person performs the same action and that the reader can recover that reference.

Courtesy and variety require separate attention

Assamese respectful second-person reference establishes a relationship with the listener. Dari also distinguishes familiar and respectful usage, but the Assamese agreement pattern cannot be transferred as an identical sequence of suffixes. Read the request as a complete social act before judging its target form.

The IAM grammar explicitly treats spoken and formal Dari as related but distinct usages. An Assamese formal notice should not be checked solely against a casual conversation phrase and then declared wrong because its forms differ. Conversely, a personal message does not need to sound like a formal announcement simply to be recognisably Dari.

Keep the requested Afghan Persian variety in view. A resource describing another Persian variety may be useful comparatively, but it does not automatically establish the most suitable wording for a Dari reader.

A similar predicate position does not finish the translation

Assamese and Dari often put substantial clause material before the predicate. That broad resemblance can make a literal draft appear convincing while its personal endings or possessive links identify the wrong people.

For an attendance message, follow the source individual and group through every clause, then distinguish the listener addressed respectfully from the colleague described. Review the register against the kind of message being sent. These checks preserve the Assamese relationships without demanding that Dari reproduce its classifiers or pronoun system word for word.
