Assamese to Literary Chinese: identifying people before compressing the sentence

A source personal reference can have several literary functions

Assamese case marking and personal reference help identify who acts and who is affected. Literary Chinese can use 之 as an object reference to a person or thing, but the same character can also mark a possessive relationship or serve as a verb meaning to go. Selecting it because a dictionary offers one matching Assamese meaning does not establish its role in a new sentence.

For an Assamese narrative in which a visitor gives something to a host, keep the visitor, host and item distinct before producing a compact literary version. A character that represents the item as an object in one clause need not represent the owner in the next. The Ministry of Education dictionary separates these uses of 之 rather than treating them as one interchangeable meaning. Read the target construction around the character, not merely the character’s isolated gloss. Otherwise, a short translation may retain all the recognisable topics while changing their relationships.

A classifier and a word for the person doing something are different devices

Assamese classifiers organise nominal reference and counting. Literary 者 can instead turn an action expression into a reference to the one associated with that action. The teaching example 耕者 means a plougher, while 鬻金者 refers to a seller of gold. This is not a general instruction to translate an Assamese classifier with 者.

If an Assamese sentence identifies the person selling an item, establish whether the source means that person, the act of selling, or the item being sold. A compact literary noun phrase must preserve that distinction. An action expression followed by a nominalising element can refer to an agent, but adding such an element to every counted noun would change the structure. Keep the source’s actual number of people as separate information when it matters; a phrase describing what someone does is not automatically a statement that exactly one individual exists.

Assamese honorific grammar should inform the relationship, not dictate an ending

Assamese distinguishes several honorific levels through pronouns and verbal forms, with respect and recipient number functioning separately. A literary rendering has no reason to copy the surface length of those forms or to treat a respectful Assamese ending as a ready-made Chinese particle. Identify whether the speaker addresses a respected person or describes that person to someone else.

For a short dedication or narrative dialogue, preserve that difference before shortening repeated references. Respect directed towards the listener and respect for a person mentioned are not the same relationship. Keep enough identity information that a compact object pronoun cannot be mistaken for the wrong participant. The goal is a coherent literary construction whose people and actions still match the Assamese passage; replacing modern words with isolated older-looking characters does not by itself supply that construction.
