Assamese event updates in written Cantonese
Not happening and not having happened need different analysis
An Assamese negative update can deny a habit, an intention or an event within a stated time. Cantonese negative expressions must be chosen through the predicate and context rather than treated as a single equivalent of every source negative form.
The Cantonese teaching grammar distinguishes uses of “唔” and “冇”. Its example about rain today uses the latter in denying the occurrence of the event. Recognising a negative source sentence is therefore only the first step; the target must deny the same kind of assertion.
For an Assamese message about somebody not going out today, keep the time expression with the event. A claim that the person never goes out is different from saying that today’s trip has not happened. A short negative translation can sound plausible while broadening the source statement.
Completed and ongoing are not interchangeable labels for past
Cantonese “咗” illustrates perfective marking, while “緊” occurs in progressive constructions. The teaching examples show that an action in progress can be situated in an earlier time. Progressive marking is consequently not a promise that every such event happens now.
Assamese encodes time and event development through its own verbal patterns. An update that construction was underway yesterday should remain different from a statement that the work finished yesterday. The target needs both the relevant time setting and an appropriate presentation of the event.
Do not add a perfective particle to every source clause associated with an earlier date. First determine whether the Assamese writer presents a bounded occurrence, continuing work or a state at that time. The same activity word can be involved in each.
The target option is Cantonese, not a character conversion
This direction requests Cantonese in Traditional characters. Standard written Mandarin converted into Traditional characters is not automatically a Cantonese translation. Cantonese vocabulary, negative constructions and particles can differ even where many characters are familiar.
An Assamese reader cannot judge the target variety from the complexity of the characters alone. Check its actual grammatical expressions. Replacing a Traditional character with its Simplified counterpart would change script presentation without resolving a wrong language construction.
The university’s parallel Cantonese and Mandarin teaching material provides a useful distinction between the varieties. For a conversational message, use a consistent written Cantonese result instead of assembling isolated Mandarin and Cantonese phrases.
Courtesy remains attached to the actual participants
Assamese pronouns and human classifiers can signal respect, while Cantonese expresses interpersonal meaning through different combinations of wording and sentence-final particles. A respectful source suffix is not a command to add one fixed particle after every target clause.
Identify the person addressed and the person whose event is reported. A courteous update about a colleague may involve a different relationship from a request sent directly to that colleague.
For this pair, verify which event is denied, whether the activity is ongoing or bounded, and which participant receives the request. These decisions preserve source distinctions that mere character conversion or a single negative-word substitution cannot capture.
