Arabic courteous meal messages in Tongan registers

Courtesy can change the target eating word

An Arabic meal message can express respect through a title, greeting or choice of request construction. Tongan can additionally select vocabulary associated with the social relationship. Translating an eating-related Arabic word through one familiar target gloss can therefore miss part of the intended register.

The ordinary Tongan word “kai” and the polite-register “tokoni” illustrate this lexical choice in the Ministry for Pacific Peoples guidance. Their different use is not a statement that two different meals are being eaten. The social framing of the event helps determine the target expression.

An everyday Arabic invitation to a colleague should not acquire ceremonial rank merely because it is courteous. Identify the participants and setting before selecting a respectful target word. The goal is to preserve the source relationship, not maximise formality independently of the message.

High-status reference needs factual support

The same guidance lists “'ilo” for honorific eating reference and “taumafa” for regal reference. These illustrate why Tongan respectful vocabulary is more specific than a single generic polite suffix. The forms are not freely interchangeable decorations on any invitation.

Arabic references to an elder, a professional title and a sovereign establish different social facts. Retain those distinctions where they are present. Do not translate every Arabic honorific into vocabulary appropriate to royalty, and do not downgrade a source’s explicitly ceremonial setting to an ordinary meal report.

The guidelines also qualify the boundaries and mastery of respectful registers. Avoid presenting one short list as a complete recipe for every social situation. In a practical translation, the target phrase must fit the source participants rather than an imagined rank assigned by the translator.

Identifying the meal is another grammatical task

Arabic commonly prefixes a definite article to identify an item already known in the exchange. Tongan has a definitive-accent system whose interaction with the noun phrase and discourse is different. A source definite meal reference cannot be handled solely by changing the eating verb’s register.

The written accent is not merely an optional pronunciation aid. Research connects it with syntactic and referential structure. Determine whether the source refers to a particular meal, food generally or a newly introduced item before building the target phrase.

Keep reference and social register separate. A ceremonially appropriate verb does not prove that the same food or occasion has been identified. Conversely, a clear reference to the dinner does not establish that the target addresses the guest with the intended respect.

Long vowels and the glottal stop remain part of the word

Tongan orthography distinguishes long vowels with macrons and represents a glottal stop. Arabic also distinguishes sound contrasts, but its usual omission of short-vowel marks is not a reason to remove target spelling marks. The selected Tongan form must retain its own written identity.

The orthography guidance discussed here is intended especially for Tongan writing in New Zealand and acknowledges differences among authoritative conventions. Use a consistent intended convention rather than mix forms opportunistically. For an Arabic meal invitation, check who is invited, the relevant register, which occasion is meant and whether the final written words retain the chosen target forms.
