Arabic to Sesotho sa Leboa: agreement follows the target noun class

A plural change can affect more than the noun

Arabic agreement distinguishes gender and number through its own noun, adjective, and verb patterns. Sesotho sa Leboa uses noun classes, with related agreement forms elsewhere in the phrase and clause. A target noun’s class is not simply an Arabic masculine or feminine category given a new label.

The contrast monna, man, and banna, men, illustrates a singular-plural pairing. When an Arabic sentence changes from one man to several, the corresponding target agreement must be checked along with the noun. The same principle applies to inanimate nouns, whose classes need not match the person pattern. Do not add a single plural prefix to every translated Arabic noun or preserve a modifier merely because its English gloss still looks suitable. The target noun, its demonstrative, and any relevant subject or object marker must identify a coherent referent.

An agreement marker is not a translated definite article

Arabic frequently identifies definite nouns with al-. Sesotho sa Leboa does not have an equivalent article that must appear before every particular person or thing. Its subject marker can participate in agreement and pronominal reference, but it should not be interpreted as a simple replacement for the Arabic article.

Original research on Northern Sotho definiteness cautions against treating the subject position or agreement marker as an absolute guarantee of definite reference. Familiarity and discourse context matter. For an Arabic report introducing a worker and later referring to that same worker, retain the source sequence and identifying information. Do not insert a demonstrative at every Arabic definite noun merely to make the article visible. That can add a pointing or contrasting meaning. Instead check whether the target reader can identify the intended person once another possible referent enters the report.

A location can contain several short target elements

Arabic location expressions commonly use prepositions before their complements. Sesotho sa Leboa has its own locative particles, and some combine rather than replace one another. The corpus-based grammar lists patterns such as ka mo and ka kua, alongside nouns that may carry the locative suffix -ng. Several small target elements can consequently express one source location relationship.

For an Arabic direction or delivery note, compare where the event happens and which place is intended, rather than assume every extra target particle introduces a second destination. A noun’s locative form is not necessarily its ordinary dictionary form with a spelling error. Keep the complete target location expression intact while verifying the actual place. Conversely, do not assemble an unfamiliar combination simply by translating two Arabic prepositions independently. The combinations follow the target’s own patterns. Preserving a recognisable destination name is useful only if its surrounding locative construction still directs the reader to the same place described in Arabic.
