Arabic to Burmese: distinguish a negative report from a prohibition

Not coming and do not come have different endings

Arabic distinguishes a statement that an action does not happen from an instruction prohibiting it. Burmese also requires this functional distinction, using different negative sentence patterns. A translation should not treat every source negative as an interchangeable word meaning no.

The Burmese expression မလာနဲ့ means do not come in the NIU teaching pattern. It instructs the recipient. A negative statement about somebody’s attendance uses a different ending. For an Arabic appointment message, establish whether the writer is reporting an absence, cancelling an invitation, or asking the recipient to stay away. These messages may concern the same journey but impose very different obligations. Preserve any politeness in the source request as well: a negative imperative can include a polite particle without becoming a positive invitation. Check the complete ending rather than only the negative material before the verb.

A target negative statement has more than one visible component

NIU’s Burmese pattern for a negative statement places မ before the predicate and ဘူး after it. The sentence-final element is not an optional repetition of an Arabic negative marker. It belongs to the target construction, including in a courteous response with the appropriate polite material.

An Arabic statement denying that a person comes should consequently remain a report in Burmese, rather than acquire the prohibition ending merely because both are negative. Also keep tense and time reference distinct. The teaching material allows positive sentence endings in past or present contexts, so an Arabic completed event may need a time expression or a fuller context to remain unambiguously earlier. The target verb’s surface form is not a complete replacement for the source timeline. A report about yesterday’s absence should not read like an open-ended claim that the person never attends.

Wanting and ability remain separate from the main action

Arabic can express a wish or ability through a verb or modal construction alongside another action. Burmese commonly places corresponding particles after the main verb: ချင် expresses wanting, while နိုင် expresses ability in the documented pattern. These particles should not be dropped because the action word itself has already been translated.

For an Arabic sentence about not being able to attend, distinguish inability from lack of desire and from a decision not to attend. A negative placed around the wrong part of a target predicate can alter that relationship. Keep the source reason and time reference attached to the attendance statement when checking it. The Burmese sequence may put the action, modality, politeness, and ending in positions quite unlike the Arabic words. What matters is whether the result still says that attendance is impossible, unwanted, or simply not happening. A short fluent negative is insufficient if it attributes the wrong intention to the person.
