Arabic book references and Mongolian Cyrillic object marking

An identified object needs its target case relationship

Arabic marks definiteness with الـ and, in fully inflected Standard Arabic, can also show case endings. Mongolian can distinguish a marked accusative object from an unmarked indefinite object, but this is not a direct replacement of the Arabic article with one target suffix.

The sentence “Би энэ номыг уншив” reports that the speaker read this book. Its demonstrative identifies the item and the noun has accusative marking. The source Arabic phrase must first be interpreted for which book is intended; the target object construction then follows Mongolian conditions.

Tokyo University of Foreign Studies also notes contexts where an indefinite object may receive accusative marking to clarify its syntactic relationship. Consequently, a rule equating every target accusative with an Arabic definite article would be too strong. Check the whole predicate and noun phrase rather than treat a case ending as an isolated translation of definiteness.

A general book object has a contrasting pattern

“Би ном уншив” reports reading a book with an unmarked indefinite object in the elementary contrast. A source Arabic message that merely reports book-reading need not identify the particular book from an earlier conversation. Conversely, the target should not lose a source demonstrative that explicitly selects this item.

Consider a reply to whether a specified document was read. An indefinite target object can make the reply sound as though some reading happened, without confirming the requested document. A message about yesterday’s activities may legitimately require that broader reading. The source question and answer together determine which interpretation belongs in the target.

Number is another separate check. Arabic can express two books through dual morphology; Mongolian needs its own quantity construction. Neither the target accusative ending nor the absence of one automatically preserves a source count of two. Keep quantity and identification distinct before forming the object.

Listener gender does not choose courteous address

Standard Arabic singular you distinguishes masculine and feminine forms. Mongolian “Та” is a courteous or plural address choice, contrasting with familiar “Чи”. The target decision concerns the relationship to the listener and participant count, rather than reproducing that Arabic gender opposition.

A source question to a female colleague and one to a male colleague do not necessarily require different Mongolian pronouns. A question to a close friend and one to a respected unfamiliar person may. Use the source relationship to select the target treatment, and keep the predicate consistent with the intended addressee.

The Cyrillic option is an orthographic commitment

This target uses modern Mongolian Cyrillic. Its letters include Ө and Ү, which are not interchangeable with visually related Russian or Latin characters. An Arabic-script source should be translated into established Mongolian words, rather than approximated through whichever Cyrillic letters happen to be available on a keyboard.

Mongolian Cyrillic and traditional Mongolian are separate script options in the translator. Keep the requested representation consistent. The final check should still concern the source event: who read, which item was read, how many items were involved and whom the message addresses. Correct-looking Cyrillic cannot compensate for changing any of those relationships.
