Arabic we in Māori invitations: who is included?

Exactly two people can require two different we forms

Standard Arabic نحن identifies a speaker-containing group without distinguishing an inclusive we from an exclusive one. It also does not have a separate first-person dual form. Māori makes both distinctions, so an isolated Arabic we can leave two target decisions unresolved: group size and whether the listener belongs to the group.

For two people including the speaker and listener, Māori uses “tāua”. For the speaker and one other person excluding the listener, “māua” provides the contrasting reference. These are not interchangeable ways to make an Arabic sentence sound friendly. They specify different participants.

In a message about a shared ride, the first can refer to you and me travelling together. The second can report that I and somebody else are travelling, while you are being informed. The vehicle and destination may be identical, yet the invitation changes if the wrong pronoun is selected.

A larger group has another pair of choices

Māori “tātou” includes the speaker, the listener and at least one additional person. “Mātou” refers to a group of three or more including the speaker but excluding the listener. An Arabic source can express either intention with the same first-person plural pronoun and verb form.

Determine whether the recipient is part of the group before translating a team announcement. An Arabic statement that we have completed the work may report the sender’s team’s achievement to an outside client. Choosing an inclusive Māori form can incorrectly represent the client as part of that working group. Conversely, excluding a teammate from a genuinely shared announcement can alter the social meaning.

The source may resolve the decision through named participants, a prior invitation or an explicit count. Use that information consistently across the message. A generic assumption that we always includes every reader is particularly unreliable when one Arabic message is forwarded to several audiences.

A second-person dual does not answer the first-person question

Arabic has explicit second-person dual address, unlike its first-person we. That source form can establish that two listeners are addressed, but it does not automatically establish whether they later belong to a speaker-containing group. Speech role and headcount need to be tracked at each clause.

A sender can first ask two people about their availability, then describe a separate group’s plan. Do not carry the source dual mechanically into the next we expression. Identify the actual members of the new group and whether the addressed people join it. Māori pronouns require this relationship to be expressed more specifically than the isolated Arabic form does.

The macron is part of the chosen form

The long vowels in these Māori pronouns are written with macrons. Keep them in the delivered text rather than reduce the forms to an ASCII approximation. The spelling helps preserve the selected lexical form; it is not an optional flourish added to make Latin writing look regional.

After choosing a pronoun, check it again whenever the message changes audience or participant count. An Arabic invitation reused for a couple, an entire team and an external recipient can need different Māori we forms even when most of the event description is unchanged. The target should invite or inform precisely the people intended by the source.
