Arabic definite items and Haitian Creole reference

A target article follows rather than precedes the item

Arabic commonly marks a definite noun with the prefix الـ. Haitian Creole places its definite determiner after the relevant noun phrase, with different singular forms conditioned by the surrounding sounds. The Arabic prefix therefore cannot be pasted in front of a Creole dictionary noun as if the two languages shared the same article arrangement.

The target phrase “tikè a” identifies the ticket. A source request for the already discussed ticket should preserve that reference, while an introduction of a new ticket may require a different construction. The target determiner is not selected according to the Arabic noun’s masculine or feminine class.

Arabic agreement can repeat definiteness on a noun and its attributive adjective. Do not reproduce every such source occurrence as another Creole determiner. First identify the full source noun phrase and its intended referent, then build the target phrase using Haitian Creole rules. Matching the number of visible article pieces is not a useful accuracy test.

The noun need not acquire an Arabic-shaped plural

Haitian Creole nouns generally do not change form solely to express number. “Fig yo” identifies the bananas through the postposed plural determiner. Arabic may instead use a broken plural or a suffixal form, so the source’s changed noun shape does not require a corresponding stem change in the target.

Standard Arabic dual morphology also carries a quantity of two. Preserve that number through a suitable target counting expression rather than reduce it to an unspecified plural. A request for two items and a general reference to several items are different instructions, even if the same target noun appears in both.

Conversely, not every Arabic plural in a general statement should be turned into a specific Creole definite group. Quantity and identification must be interpreted separately. A source discussing tickets in general does not necessarily identify the tickets that a reader already holds.

A gendered source pronoun can become li

Arabic هو and هي distinguish masculine and feminine third-person reference. Haitian Creole “li” can refer to either, and can also appear in different grammatical roles. Its occurrence does not by itself tell the reader whether the source participant was male or female.

If a source exchange relies on gender to distinguish two people, resolve which one performs the action before choosing shortened target reference. The same person may be represented by li in one clause and by an already supplied name in another where clarification is necessary. Do not introduce a new person merely to make an ambiguous target sentence easier to read.

An ongoing event is not just an unchanged verb

“M ap pale” reports that the speaker is speaking. The preverbal marker participates in expressing the event view, while the lexical verb does not take Arabic-style person endings. A source present or imperfect-form Arabic verb must therefore be interpreted in context rather than converted into one target tense marker mechanically.

Arabic can use a present-form verb for habitual or future-oriented meanings in the appropriate setting. The target should preserve that meaning, not automatically announce an action underway now. Check the participants, time expression and kind of event together before selecting the Haitian Creole predicate. Its compact written form still encodes a complete assertion.
