Arabic to Catalan: two objects and two kinds of attached information

The Arabic dual needs an explicit Catalan quantity

Arabic can encode exactly two through a productive dual system. Catalan has singular and plural agreement rather than a matching full dual paradigm. A translation can therefore require an explicit numeral to retain a pair that the source noun or verb already identifies.

For a request involving two tickets, distinguish two tickets for one journey from tickets for two journeys. Then compare the Catalan count with the noun it modifies. A target plural alone may leave the quantity open even though the Arabic original was precise enough for a purchase or reservation.

An attached object can change its written position

Arabic attaches object pronouns to verbs, and Catalan also uses short object forms, but they follow different placement and spelling rules. The documented Catalan fer-ho means to do it, with a hyphen joining the infinitive and object form. Other Catalan finite constructions place a clitic before the verb.

Read a translated Arabic instruction through its actor, affected item, and recipient before judging its spaces or hyphens. A separate target clitic may preserve a participant expressed inside the Arabic spelling. Conversely, an attached form is not automatically correct merely because the source also writes its pronoun together with the verb.

A contraction combines a relationship and an article

Catalan al combines a and el, while del combines de and el. Arabic also has bound article material and attaches some prepositions, but the surface resemblance of compact expressions does not guarantee equivalent internal structure. Each target phrase needs its own grammatical analysis.

For a location or ownership statement, verify what relationship the contraction expresses with its noun. A word corresponding to of the should not be substituted simply because an Arabic phrase contains an attached article and another attached element. Keep destination, origin, and ownership separate when several such phrases occur in the same message.

Gender and address are not the same choice

Arabic distinguishes masculine and feminine listener forms. Catalan tu and respectful vostè do not reproduce that male-and-female split. The listener's gender alone therefore cannot determine the Catalan address style appropriate to a customer, colleague, or relative.

Catalan nouns and their modifiers still have grammatical gender, so an item description needs the actual target noun as its agreement anchor. Do not let the gender of the Arabic speaker determine adjectives describing that person's ticket, document, or other property. A useful final review for this direction keeps four matters separate: exact pair quantity, object-clitic reference, contraction meaning, and address style. Together they preserve the Arabic request while allowing Catalan to place its small grammatical pieces where its own constructions require them.
