Arabic giving events and Basque participant marking

The giver, recipient and item have distinct target roles

An Arabic message about giving something can encode participants through separate noun phrases and attached pronouns. Basque likewise represents several participants in its predicate, but through a different case and agreement system. A target translation must preserve who gives, who receives and what is transferred before its endings are selected.

The Basque example “gizonak umeari liburua eman dio” reports that the man has given the book to the child. The giver is ergative-marked, the recipient dative-marked and the book absolutive. These target relationships cannot be recovered by assigning every Arabic subject a single Basque ending regardless of the verb.

In a practical message, exchanging giver and recipient changes the event even if the same names and book word remain present. Check the source attached pronouns carefully, then inspect the target noun phrases and auxiliary together. Their combined agreement expresses a participant structure, not a collection of independent word translations.

An arriving participant has another case relationship

“Umea etorri da” states that the child has come. The arriving child is not marked like the giver in the previous transitive event. Basque ergative alignment distinguishes these constructions; a blanket rule that marks every subject with -k would therefore be inaccurate.

Standard Arabic also distinguishes grammatical roles, but its nominative subject category does not map uniformly to one Basque case across these event types. Translate the actual predicate first. A source person who arrives and a source person who gives a book can both be the grammatical subject in Arabic while participating in different Basque case patterns.

The auxiliary changes with the target construction too. Do not reuse the giving predicate’s auxiliary simply because the same child appears in the next sentence. Participant identity can remain constant while grammatical role and predicate structure change.

A source possessive phrase needs its relationship interpreted

The Basque phrase “emakumearen argazkia” concerns the woman’s photograph. Possession-like relations can encompass ownership, authorship or the person depicted, depending on context. An Arabic possessive construction can likewise require interpretation beyond the broad label of ownership.

If the source says somebody should send her photograph, establish whether the sender means a photograph depicting her or one she owns or took. A target genitive phrase may retain ambiguity rather than resolve it automatically. Where the source gives a clearer relationship, preserve that clarification instead of shortening it into an ambiguous target expression.

A location-based modifier is not always an owner

“Etxe handiko leihoak” refers to the windows in or from the big house. Basque uses a ko phrase for this location relationship. An Arabic construction linking the house and its windows should therefore be understood according to the relation between the referents, not forced into a single target equivalent of of.

Arabic adjectives commonly follow the noun, and Basque attributive adjectives also commonly follow it, but this local similarity does not determine the placement of a complete modifier phrase. The Basque house modifier precedes the window noun. Build the target phrase from its actual head and dependents: matching one adjective-order tendency cannot establish the structure of the entire noun phrase.
