Arabic duals and Bashkir counted nouns

Two items need a target quantity, not an Arabic ending

Standard Arabic can express two items through dual morphology, as in كتابان for two books in the nominative. Bashkir does not use that Arabic singular–dual–plural pattern. A source dual therefore supplies a quantity that must be expressed through an appropriate target counting phrase, not retained as part of a borrowed book word.

The Bashkir phrase “ике китап” expresses two books. Its noun remains in the singular-shaped counting construction. Do not add a target plural simply because an English explanation says books or because the Arabic source is not singular. The target numeral construction determines the form, while the source determines how many objects are meant.

Arabic dual endings can change with grammatical case, so a different source ending need not mean a different number. Before translating an order or inventory, establish the quantity independently of the noun’s role. Two books requested, two books received and a reference to two books can share a quantity while appearing in different Arabic constructions.

The same counting principle extends beyond two

The Bashkir noun “ат” means a horse, and “алты ат” expresses six horses. Poppe’s grammar uses this kind of numeral-plus-singular pattern. It is not an instruction to use an unmarked noun in every plural context: a bare reference to several animals and a phrase governed by an explicit numeral are different constructions.

Standard Arabic cardinal constructions also have their own number and gender rules. Those source relationships should be interpreted for meaning before they are rebuilt in Bashkir. An Arabic numeral’s gender opposition is not a reason to invent masculine and feminine Bashkir versions of the number.

In a delivery message, retain distinctions such as six individual animals versus six groups or containers of something. A grammatically correct numeral phrase can still state the wrong quantity if the unit being counted has changed. Identify the counted head of the source phrase, then construct the target noun and numeral together.

A source gendered person can have one target pronoun

Arabic third-person singular pronouns distinguish masculine and feminine reference. Bashkir “ул” can refer to he or she. A natural translation may consequently express less overt gender information while identifying the same person. A missing male-or-female distinction in this pronoun is not by itself evidence that the translation changed the referent.

If the Arabic source uses gender to keep two people distinct, follow the event roles before shortening target references. Repeating an existing name may clarify genuine ambiguity. It should not introduce an extra participant or an identity absent from the source.

Case and possession belong to the chosen target word

Bashkir attaches case and possessive suffixes according to its own grammatical and sound patterns. The Arabic definite prefix does not translate into one universal target suffix, and an Arabic case ending cannot select a Bashkir case through visual resemblance.

For an identified object, distinguish its reference from its role in the target clause. A known book may need case marking because of the construction, while its identity is recovered from context. Check both relationships. Arabic attached material and Bashkir suffix chains encode different systems; matching their apparent number of pieces is not a reliable way to preserve the message.
