Arabic to Amharic: related grammatical ideas still require new constructions

Do not assume that two Semitic languages share their forms

Arabic and Amharic both use substantial verbal morphology, but their actual person, gender, and number patterns are different. An Arabic source with an attached pronoun cannot be translated by preserving its physical position and substituting an Amharic-looking ending. The target verb must express the same participants through an Amharic construction.

The Amharic reference contrasts ነገርክ and ነገርሽ, you told with masculine and feminine singular listener reference. These illustrate why the identity of the addressee matters even when Arabic also marks listener gender. Similar categories do not make the two sets of forms interchangeable.

The exact pair may need to be stated explicitly

Arabic has a productive singular, dual, and plural distinction. Do not expect every dual Arabic expression to generate a visibly matching Amharic dual noun and verb pattern. If a source instruction depends on exactly two items or people, retain that quantity explicitly in the target meaning.

For a travel arrangement, separate two travellers from a general group and from two journeys made by one traveller. Those are different quantities even when related source words appear. A translation containing a plural reference can still fail the booking requirement if it no longer tells the recipient that precisely two places are needed.

Subject agreement and object reference are different pieces

Amharic subject agreement and attached object pronouns perform different grammatical functions. The documented ነገረኝ means he told me: it identifies both the teller and a first-person affected participant. An Arabic reader should therefore inspect the entire form rather than treat its final attached material as another subject ending.

When a message concerns relaying information, map the original teller, the intermediary, and the final recipient before reviewing the Amharic. Arabic can also attach object and possessive reference, but a familiar compact appearance does not establish that the corresponding target person has the same role. Clarify ownership separately if the message includes somebody's document or property.

Writing direction changes, not the intended participants

Arabic is written from right to left, while Amharic Ethiopic text runs from left to right. Preserve the target script and ordinary reading direction when copying the result into a message containing names or numbers. Reversing the characters to imitate the source layout destroys the text rather than making it more faithful.

At the meaning level, compare the people and exact quantities first, then the reported action or request. Avoid selecting a target form only because its visible length resembles the Arabic word. For this direction, accuracy depends on maintaining listener gender where relevant, distinguishing subject from attached object reference, and making an exact pair explicit when the source dual carries a practical requirement. Shared grammatical ancestry does not remove those construction-by-construction decisions.
