Amharic to Urdu: noun endings can change for case as well as number

The same plural can look different before a postposition

Amharic has its own plural formations and noun-attached grammatical material. Urdu distinguishes direct and oblique noun forms, with postpositions selecting an oblique construction. The romanized examples laṛke, boys, and laṛkoñ meñ, among boys, show a change that does not increase or decrease the number of people. The following relationship word affects the noun’s form.

For an Amharic description of items in a place or people within a group, keep the relational expression with its noun when translating. A target oblique plural is not an unwanted extra plural suffix merely because the dictionary lists a different plural. Conversely, copying a direct form before a postposition can produce an incorrect target expression. Identify what the source noun refers to and what relationship it has in the sentence, then check the complete Urdu phrase.

A first-person source can leave target gender unresolved

Amharic first-person singular reference does not distinguish a male from a female speaker in the way that some Urdu predicate forms can. Urdu agreement involves gender, number, person, and respectful usage through its own constructions. A source statement beginning with I may therefore require speaker information that is not recoverable from that pronoun alone.

This is particularly useful when translating an Amharic personal status update or a conversation with alternating speakers. Do not choose an Urdu gendered predicate from the gender of somebody mentioned as an object. Identify the speaker for the current turn. At the same time, agreement in Urdu does not always follow the person that a reader informally calls the subject; the construction and its case marking matter. Check the predicate with its participants rather than assuming that every gendered ending repeats the source’s most visible pronoun.

Shared borrowed words do not guarantee identical grammatical behaviour

Amharic and Urdu each have histories of contact and borrowing, but a familiar-looking term should be interpreted within its actual source sentence. Urdu vocabulary includes words with plural patterns inherited or borrowed from Arabic and Persian alongside ordinary Urdu formations. A target form need not use the same plural mechanism as the Amharic word that it translates.

In a source list of documents, qualities, or pieces of news, preserve what is being counted rather than impose a single plural ending across the Urdu output. Some borrowed forms have specialised meanings or behave as ordinary singular nouns despite their historical origin. The relevant check is contemporary meaning in the phrase. Keep official names and reference codes identifiable while allowing the surrounding Urdu noun to take its required case or number form. Neither similar origin nor a recognisable word root is sufficient evidence that the complete target expression preserves the Amharic quantity and relationship.
