Amharic to Serbian Latin: keep the speaker, script and language standard distinct

First-person reference can leave a Serbian agreement choice open

Amharic has masculine and feminine distinctions in second- and third-person reference, but its first-person singular pronoun does not identify the speaker’s gender. Serbian past-tense participles can require that information even with a first-person subject. Došao sam and Došla sam illustrate a male and a female speaker saying I arrived. The target difference need not correspond to two different Amharic pronouns.

For an Amharic personal account, use the known speaker rather than infer gender from an occupation, destination, or somebody else named in the sentence. In quoted dialogue, the speaker may change at each turn. A target participle copied unchanged through the exchange can therefore assign agreement to the wrong person. If the source is an isolated first-person statement with no speaker information, the needed distinction may remain genuinely unresolved. A fluent-looking target ending does not prove that the source supplied that information.

Latin letters are Serbian spelling, not a substitute language

This target uses Serbian in the Latin alphabet. The letters and digraphs documented in its alphabet include distinctions such as č versus ć and the single-letter status of digraphs such as lj and nj. Preserve the supplied target spelling when copying it. Removing marks because the source used a different script can make a word or name less precise.

An Amharic proper name may need a Serbian rendering, but choosing Latin script does not itself require changing the person’s identity, the language variety, or the pronunciation standard. Serbian also uses Cyrillic; a passage in Serbian Latin is not automatically Croatian simply because the visible alphabet resembles Croatian writing. Keep any official identifier in its supplied form when it functions as an identifier. The surrounding translated sentence can use Serbian grammar without turning that identifier into an ordinary word to be respelled.

A Serbian construction can differ from a familiar neighbouring equivalent

Amharic verb sequences should be interpreted for the relationship between their actions, rather than translated into one fixed target infinitive pattern. Serbian frequently uses da followed by a finite present form in environments where a neighbouring standard may prefer an infinitive. Volim da telefoniram illustrates I like to talk on the phone. The repeated person information belongs to the target construction; it does not introduce another speaker.

For a source statement about wanting, needing, or liking an action, keep the dependent action with its governing expression. A target da clause should not be split into an unrelated assertion merely because it contains its own verb form. At the same time, shared grammar and widespread mutual comprehension across Serbian, Croatian, and Bosnian do not remove their standard distinctions. Check the chosen Serbian vocabulary and construction together. An alphabet conversion alone cannot establish that an Amharic message has been translated into the requested standard.
