Amharic event roles in Pashto past reports

The final verb still needs a new agreement analysis

Amharic and Pashto often put the main verb near the end of a neutral clause. That shared tendency can conceal a major difference when an Amharic report describes one person doing something to another participant. In relevant Pashto past transitive constructions, case and agreement are organised differently from ordinary present-tense subject agreement.

The grammatical actor can have an oblique form while the affected object controls verbal agreement. This does not turn an active source event into an event with a different actor. A report of a person seeing a woman must continue to identify the same person as the viewer and the same woman as the person seen. The target agreement is a grammatical way of organising that event, not a reason to exchange their roles.

Before checking the final word, mark the source event’s actor, affected participant and time. Amharic verbal person marking cannot simply be copied as the target agreement ending. A target verb agreeing with a feminine object may be correct even when the actor is male. Conversely, forcing the ending to match the actor can misassemble the selected Pashto past construction.

One first-person reference can have different forms

Pashto “زه” is a direct first-person form, while “ما” is used in relevant oblique positions. These illustrate a construction-dependent difference rather than two different speakers. Amharic first-person reference does not instruct the translator to use the same Pashto pronoun form in every present and past sentence.

The parallel second-person forms “ته” and “تا” likewise need their grammatical setting. An Amharic sentence addressing a listener may describe that listener as actor, object or recipient. Being the person addressed does not guarantee a single target case form. Identify the participant’s role inside the particular clause before selecting its target representation.

These strong pronoun examples make the distinction visible, but they are not a requirement to insert an emphatic independent pronoun into every translated sentence. Pashto also uses shorter pronominal clitics. An Amharic participant expressed through verbal morphology may be represented through a different combination of target agreement and pronoun material. Repetition added merely to expose every source ending can change the emphasis of the target.

Object gender belongs to the chosen Pashto noun

Amharic and Pashto both distinguish masculine and feminine forms, but this similarity is not a guarantee that corresponding nouns have matching grammatical gender. When a Pashto predicate’s agreement is controlled by an object, the target noun’s gender and number matter. The source noun’s grammatical category cannot select the ending on its own.

Past compound predicates require particular care: research describes interactions between aspect, the components of the predicate and agreement. A rule claiming that every past word always follows one simple object-agreement recipe would be too broad. Check the actual target construction rather than applying that slogan to all event types.

For an Amharic account with several actions, revisit these relationships at each predicate. A pronoun or ending valid for the first present-tense clause may not remain valid after the narrative shifts to a completed transitive event. Preserve the source participants while rebuilding the grammatical connections that Pashto uses to express them.
