Amharic to traditional Mongolian: distinguish a written volume from its teaching

A book word can cover more than a physical book

An Amharic message involving a book, lesson, or religious text needs enough context to identify what the writer means. Mongolian ᠨᠣᠮ, conventionally transliterated nom, can refer to a written work and also occurs in expressions involving learning, religious teaching, or rules. Recognizing a plausible book word in the output does not establish that the whole expression has selected the intended sense.

A request to return a borrowed volume is about an object that somebody can bring back. An account of following a teaching concerns an idea or practice. Keep the action and modifiers with the Amharic noun when translating. If the source identifies a particular religious tradition or a named work, preserve that identification; the possible religious senses of a Mongolian word are not permission to substitute a different tradition or text.

For a reading-group message, clarify whether people should bring the book, read a section, or discuss its teaching. These instructions can share vocabulary while assigning different tasks. Check the finished message for the actual requested action rather than judging it solely by whether the expected noun appears. A dictionary entry with several related meanings is a starting point for interpretation, not evidence that all those meanings fit the source equally well.

The traditional word has its own established spelling

Traditional Mongolian water is written ᠤᠰᠤ, transliterated usu, while Cyrillic Mongolian uses ус. The traditional form includes a written vowel that the short Cyrillic spelling does not show. For an Amharic label or simple request, that difference should not be interpreted as an extra syllable accidentally added by the translator. The selected script has its own orthographic conventions.

This also affects name checking. A phonetic rendering of an Ethiopian name is a different task from selecting the established traditional spelling of an ordinary Mongolian word. Do not repair every unfamiliar output by first converting it to Cyrillic and then converting the characters back. For exact document matching, retain the name spelling used on the document separately from the translated surrounding description.

Joined letter shapes are expected; broken meaning is not

Traditional Mongolian letters have contextual shapes, so a character within a connected word can look different from its isolated alphabet-chart form. Inserting spaces to expose individual letters can damage the word. Amharic readers accustomed to visually separated fidäl characters should therefore avoid using isolation as a test of whether the Mongolian spelling is correct.

The traditional script is normally written in vertical lines with columns progressing from left to right. A horizontal software preview does not change the underlying text into a right-to-left script. If the result displays poorly after copying, check support for Mongolian shaping before deleting letters or reversing their order.

Finally, return to the source's relationships: who owns the volume, who should bring it, and whether the instruction concerns an object or its contents. Preserve the Amharic negation if the message says not to bring or share something. An attractive connected shape cannot prove that those facts survived, while an unfamiliar but valid traditional spelling is not itself evidence of a mistranslation.
