Amharic to Icelandic: whose gender belongs to which word?

Separate a listener from the thing described

Amharic distinguishes masculine and feminine singular listeners, including the pronouns አንተ and አንቺ. Icelandic þú does not divide its basic second-person reference that way. However, Icelandic grammatical gender remains important in nouns and adjectives. Losing one visible distinction in address does not remove gender agreement from the rest of the translation.

If an Amharic message says that someone is hungry, the Icelandic adjective can change with the person or noun being described. The language institute illustrates svangur, svöng, and svangt. These are related forms, not a choice between three degrees of hunger. Identify the subject of the description before judging whether the ending is appropriate.

An item name may change when its role changes

Icelandic has four noun cases, with case also affecting adjectives and pronouns. A name or item can therefore appear in a different written form as its sentence role changes. Amharic readers should not treat each inflected version as a different person or object.

For a message about lending something, separate owner, borrower, and item in the Amharic source. Then follow those roles through the Icelandic noun phrases. This is more useful than asking whether every noun remains identical to a vocabulary-list form. An ending that looks unfamiliar can be precisely the feature keeping the lender distinct from the recipient.

The subject still controls the verb

The institute's examples Ég ber and Þú berð mean I carry and you carry. Amharic likewise identifies participants through verbal agreement, but the actual divisions and forms are different. Recognizing that both languages inflect verbs does not justify exchanging their pieces mechanically.

In a practical instruction, confirm whether the original reports what the sender will do or asks the recipient to do it. A change from I to you can require a visible Icelandic verb change even when the object is unchanged. When checking several short Amharic messages together, keep each speaker's line separate so that first-person reference does not drift between participants.

Name forms and accents deserve independent attention

Icelandic personal-name customs commonly favor given names in ordinary address. An Amharic formal address should therefore preserve its intended courtesy without automatically imposing a surname-only convention on the Icelandic reply. A familiar-looking form of address can still belong to normal respectful local communication.

Keep accented Icelandic vowels and letters such as þ and ð when copying the result. The accents distinguish sound values; they are not optional visual emphasis. For this pair, check grammatical participants before typography, then preserve the actual target spelling. A correctly identified recipient and a correctly inflected adjective will not help much if a copied address or personal name is subsequently altered into a different written form.
