Amharic greetings and personal recollections in Bosnian

A familiar greeting can lose a gender distinction

Amharic familiar questions about wellbeing distinguish a male listener from a female listener. Bosnian “Kako si?” asks how one familiar listener is without encoding the same male–female difference in that short phrase. An identical Bosnian wording can therefore correspond to different gendered Amharic source forms.

This is useful when translating a personal chat. Do not add a gender label merely to reproduce every visible source distinction. The person being addressed remains the same even if Bosnian does not mark their gender in the greeting. However, familiarity still matters: a courteous source greeting should not be reduced to the familiar pattern simply because the target no longer needs the source’s gender choice.

A past statement can introduce another gender choice

For a first-person past statement, Bosnian “Bio sam” and “Bila sam” distinguish male and female speakers. An Amharic first-person source may not spell out that distinction in the same way. The direction of the information change can therefore reverse within one conversation: the greeting loses a contrast, while a recollection may require one.

Identify the speaker before selecting a past participle. The gender of the listener from the previous greeting does not decide the gender of the person now reporting an experience. A dialogue can switch speakers, and copying a form from the preceding line can assign the wrong identity. Keep the actual speaker attached to each quoted or reported statement.

Source object marking is not a Bosnian ending rule

Amharic marks grammatical relationships through its own noun and verb constructions, including definite-object marking in relevant clauses. Bosnian uses a case system with its own noun and modifier forms. A source ending does not select an identical target ending merely because both participate in identifying an object.

For a message about giving a book to someone, distinguish the giver, the book and the recipient. Each relationship may be expressed differently in Bosnian. Do not translate a series of source nouns independently and then assume their order will supply the target roles. The correct vocabulary can still describe a different transfer if case or agreement connects it incorrectly.

The final verb need not stay final

Amharic commonly places its main verb after the object. Bosnian permits several orders shaped by grammar and discourse, and short unstressed forms have their own placement patterns. Reproducing the Amharic sequence throughout a long sentence is therefore not a reliable route to natural Bosnian.

This matters in a recollection containing a reason or reported speech. Identify which action belongs to which participant before rearranging the clauses. A short past auxiliary should remain with its appropriate predicate rather than drift next to whichever noun seems most familiar. The target is Bosnian, so the finished message should also follow the expected Bosnian vocabulary and writing conventions; its relationship to neighbouring standards does not authorise replacing local choices indiscriminately. Check the complete greeting or recollection for the intended relationship, speaker and event rather than judging it solely by word order similarity.
