Amharic person and respect distinctions in Bhojpuri
I does not have to resemble another language’s I
Amharic “እኔ” identifies a single speaker. Bhojpuri “हम” can likewise be singular first person, as documented in the cited research grammar. An Amharic reader familiar with Hindi should not reinterpret that Bhojpuri form automatically as a group merely because a similar spelling carries plural meaning in another language.
The distinction matters in a personal declaration. A sentence about the speaker’s own plan should not silently become a commitment by several people. Bhojpuri has plural forms such as “हमनी” in the documented paradigm. Follow the intended participant count in the Amharic passage and the actual Bhojpuri construction rather than importing a neighbouring language’s pronoun table.
A gendered listener is a separate question from courtesy
Amharic familiar address distinguishes male and female listeners through forms such as antä and anči. Bhojpuri pronoun choice organises social level differently. The respectful form “रउआ” illustrates a courtesy choice rather than an equivalent of only one gendered Amharic second-person pronoun.
When translating a greeting or request, establish the relationship as well as the listener. A message to a woman is not automatically formal, and one to a man is not automatically familiar. Preserve any explicit Amharic respectful intent, then review the Bhojpuri predicate with the selected form. A salutation alone does not determine agreement throughout the rest of the message.
Pronoun neutrality does not erase agreement information
The Bhojpuri grammar describes pronouns without separate gender suffixes while documenting gender-related distinctions in relevant finite verb forms. Amharic also distributes person and gender information through its predicate. A target pronoun that does not visibly resemble the source gender contrast is therefore only part of the comparison.
For an account containing several participants, track who performs each action before choosing the full Bhojpuri clause. A target draft can use a plausible pronoun and still select a predicate form associated with another person or social level. Do not conclude that every grammatical distinction vanished merely because it moved away from the independent pronoun. Equally, do not add a gender description that the source did not make.
A complete role can need more than a bare pronoun
Amharic marks grammatical relationships through its own affixes and constructions. Bhojpuri uses pronoun forms together with case markers and postpositions. A form appropriate when somebody acts is not automatically the complete expression needed when an action concerns or benefits that person.
In a message about giving something, identify the actor, the transferred item and the recipient separately. A dictionary entry for the person pronoun cannot decide all three roles. Keep the entire Amharic proposition together before assembling the target clause. The Bhojpuri examples here follow one documented grammatical description with regional variation acknowledged; they should not be treated as instructions to convert the source into Hindi or to combine incompatible forms from unrelated phrasebooks. A correct translation preserves the same participants and their relationships while selecting a coherent Bhojpuri address and agreement pattern.
