Afrikaans to Turkish: identify the object and the owner before choosing endings

Die and ’n do not become a pair of Turkish articles

Afrikaans puts a visible article before many nouns: die identifies a particular referent, while ’n introduces an indefinite one. Turkish does not reproduce that distinction with two matching articles. For direct objects, specificity and definiteness can instead affect the noun ending. Kitap okudum describes reading a book or books; Kitabı okudum identifies the book read. These are short grammatical illustrations, not a rule that every occurrence of die must produce the same suffix.

An Afrikaans sentence about reading die boek therefore gives the translator information beyond the dictionary meaning of boek. The reader is expected to know which book is meant. If a source message alternates between ’n boek and die boek after introducing it, preserve that progression. Replacing both with an article-free Turkish noun can erase the distinction between introducing an object and referring back to it. Conversely, adding an object suffix everywhere would make nonspecific references unnecessarily definite.

Jan se boek requires Turkish possession on a different model

Afrikaans can place se between an owner and a possession. Turkish commonly marks both sides of a definite possessive relationship: the owner receives a genitive ending and the possessed noun a possessive ending. The difference matters when an Afrikaans booking note lists an owner, an item, and a recipient in quick succession. The Turkish forms identify their relationships, rather than simply following the same sequence of independent words.

Number also needs two separate decisions. In ons boek the owners are plural but the book is singular; in my boeke the owner is singular and the books are plural. Turkish can express both distinctions within the possessed noun. Do not infer several books merely because the owner is ons, or one owner merely because the possession is singular. When checking a translated inventory or shared document reference, ask separately how many people own it and how many objects are involved.

U and julle may meet at siz, but address still matters

Afrikaans distinguishes familiar singular jy, respectful u, and plural julle. Turkish sen and siz divide that space differently: siz can address several people or one person respectfully. A Turkish rendering of u and a rendering of julle may therefore share the same pronoun and verbal person without having identical social meanings. The surrounding message carries the difference between a courteous individual request and an instruction to a group.

Keep salutations and named recipients attached to the request when translating Afrikaans correspondence. A greeting to one customer helps interpret respectful address; a note to several colleagues establishes actual plurality. Turkish may omit an explicit subject when the verb already supplies it, so counting visible pronouns is a poor way to check whether the recipient survived. Examine the request and its verb together. A switch from courteous address to familiar singular address halfway through an Afrikaans email should be intentional rather than an accidental change caused by translating each sentence separately.
