Afrikaans het is not always the same Serbian verb

Possession and past time diverge

Afrikaans “Ek het ’n boek” can be Serbian “Imam knjigu”. In contrast, “Ek het gelees” uses het as part of a past construction, which Serbian expresses through a different predicate. Recognising the spelling het is not enough; identify whether the source asserts possession or locates an event in the past.

This is a practical trap in short messages. Someone reporting that they have a document and someone reporting that they have read it are making different claims. A saved target equivalent of the possession verb should not be carried into a past report merely because the Afrikaans input begins with the same words. Parse the complete source predicate before choosing the Serbian expression.

A first-person past can require speaker information

The Serbian past “Čitao sam” corresponds to a male speaker’s report of reading. A female speaker uses a different participle form. Afrikaans ek and its past participle do not identify that distinction in the same way, so an isolated sentence may need more context to choose a target form accurately.

For a review written in the first person, establish the speaker rather than guessing from the subject matter. A document about a traditionally gendered activity does not establish its writer’s identity. Once the source supplies the person, retain the corresponding pattern through subsequent past statements. Changing the action word in a stored sentence can also require reviewing the participle instead of simply substituting a dictionary infinitive.

The book changes form because it is an object

The knjigu in the possession example differs from the dictionary heading knjiga. Serbian case helps express the noun’s grammatical role. Afrikaans ’n boek does not itself display a corresponding ending, so a direct source-noun substitution can miss information supplied by the target construction.

Do not erase the ending because the basic noun looks more familiar in a search result. Likewise, moving the phrase into a prepositional construction may require another form. The object, owner and destination are different relationships even when the source uses the same noun for each. A target dictionary heading is a useful lookup entry, not a universal phrase to paste into every sentence.

Latin letters still follow Serbian rules

Afrikaans “Ek lees nie” can be Serbian “Ne čitam”. The Latin-script target uses letters and diacritics according to Serbian conventions. The mark on č is part of the letter’s identity, not an optional decorative accent that should be removed for compatibility.

The Serbian Latin option also does not mean that Afrikaans pronunciation rules apply. Preserve the standard letters through copying and editing, and keep the target script consistent. In a longer message, small unstressed forms such as the past auxiliary have their own placement rules; rearranging them to match Afrikaans order can disrupt a correct predicate. Review the sentence as Serbian, including its case and verb forms, rather than treating a Latin-looking result as source-language grammar with translated vocabulary.
