Afrikaans to Russian: decide whether the action reaches its endpoint

Het gelees does not automatically mean finished reading

Afrikaans Ek het gelees places reading in the past but does not, by itself, state that a particular text was finished. Russian requires an aspectual choice. Its imperfective forms can describe an activity or repeated event; perfective forms present an event with an endpoint. The target should preserve the source’s intended claim rather than mechanically treating every Afrikaans participle as perfective.

For a work update, distinguish time spent reading from completion of the assigned document. If the sender finished the whole text, include that in Afrikaans. If the sender only read part of it, retain that limitation. Otherwise the translation could falsely confirm that someone has completed preparation for a meeting.

Aspect is not simply a past-versus-present distinction. Both perfective and imperfective Russian verbs can describe past events, so selecting a past ending does not resolve how the event is presented. The activity’s scope and its relationship to the surrounding conversation matter too.

A future plan can use one verb or an auxiliary construction

Afrikaans sal can express a future event without changing the activity verb according to aspect. Russian can express future time with an imperfective infinitive after a future auxiliary or with a conjugated perfective verb. Я буду читать presents future reading as an activity; Я прочитаю presents a bounded reading event.

This difference helps distinguish a plan to spend the evening reading from a commitment to read a specific document through. Do not judge the one-word future as a present-tense error simply because its ending resembles a present pattern. In a perfective verb, that non-past form refers to the future.

For an instruction involving a deadline, keep the exact completion requirement in the Afrikaans source. A promise to have the document read before a call is more specific than saying the sender will be reading around that time. The translation must preserve that commitment, not merely the general activity.

Ek supplies no gender information for the Russian past

Afrikaans first-person past constructions do not change according to the speaker’s gender. Russian singular past forms agree with the subject in gender. A personal account beginning with ek can therefore require information that the source verb leaves unmarked.

Identify the actual speaker of each quoted line. If a woman’s message is pasted by a man, the Russian past-tense agreement should still follow the woman who made the statement. Do not apply the website user’s identity to every first-person sentence being translated.

This agreement choice is separate from the aspect choice. A verb can have the correct masculine or feminine ending while still misrepresenting whether the action was completed. Check the participant and the event interpretation independently, especially in a report that combines several people’s actions over a sequence of days.
