Afrikaans first-person accounts in Polish: whose past form?

Ek can leave a Polish gender choice unresolved

Afrikaans “Ek het gelees” can become Polish “Czytałem” for a male speaker or “Czytałam” for a female speaker. The Polish form identifies both first person and the gender distinction, while the Afrikaans sentence does not reveal the latter. An isolated source quotation therefore may not determine one unique target form.

For a personal review or travel diary, check who is speaking before saving the translated sentence. Do not guess from the subject matter: a review of a book or vehicle does not identify its author’s gender. If the source already establishes the speaker, use that information consistently across the passage. A new first-person sentence should not silently change the identity implied by the preceding Polish forms.

A past event is not automatically a completed result

The Afrikaans het construction does not by itself select the Polish aspectual viewpoint. Reporting time spent reading and reporting that a book was finished are different claims. Polish can use different verbs or constructions to retain that difference, even when Afrikaans presents both with a past auxiliary.

This is especially useful in progress updates. A statement that somebody worked on a task should not become a promise that the task is finished. Retain an explicit Afrikaans completion expression if one is present. If the source only describes an activity, do not invent its endpoint merely because the target needs a past-tense form. Time reference and completion are related but separate decisions.

Die does not supply a Polish article

Afrikaans die and ’n mark reference in a way Polish does not reproduce through a matching pair of independent articles. Polish noun forms and their sentence context do other grammatical work. A target without a separate equivalent of die can still refer to the particular object already discussed.

Do not compensate by adding a demonstrative everywhere. “This” or “that” can create a contrast or pointing meaning the Afrikaans text did not require. First identify whether the noun is new, established or explicitly contrasted. Then judge the full Polish phrase, including its case and any modifier, instead of looking for one target token corresponding to each source article.

Negation belongs before the Polish predicate

Polish “Nie czytam” expresses Afrikaans “Ek lees nie”. The negative appears before the verb in this simple example. A longer Afrikaans clause may distribute negative material differently, but its extra nie is not an instruction to place another independent denial at the end of the Polish sentence.

The change can also affect other parts of a target construction, so a positive saved translation should not be negated by inserting words at source-matching positions. Check the denied proposition as a whole. In a first-person account, preserve the person and relevant gender form while changing the polarity. Otherwise a superficially small edit can simultaneously alter who is speaking, whether the action happened and how the object relates to the verb.
