Afrikaans to Khmer: distinguish the speaker, the addressee and the time
A polite answer can identify the speaker's gender
Afrikaans ja does not distinguish who says it. Khmer polite response particles include បាទ, commonly used by a male speaker, and ចាស, commonly used by a female speaker. The relevant person is the one giving the response, not the customer or colleague being addressed.
This matters when reusing a saved reply for someone else to send. A response originally written for a man is not automatically the right wording for a woman merely because the recipient remains unchanged. Also distinguish an acknowledgment from agreement with a proposition: a courteous response inside a conversation should be interpreted through the question it answers, rather than as an isolated universal yes.
U is respectful, but it does not specify every Khmer relationship
Afrikaans distinguishes familiar jy from respectful u. Khmer address choices can additionally reflect relative age, status and the particular social exchange. លោក and លោកស្រី are examples of respectful forms, but there is no single pronoun that fits every situation simply because the Afrikaans uses u.
For a message to a teacher, an older acquaintance or a customer, identify that relationship before judging the target. Do not interpret every respectful Khmer expression as a literal new title or family connection. Equally, avoid replacing it with a familiar form merely to shorten the message. A polite request needs consistent address throughout, including later references to the same recipient.
Het plus a participle need not become another conjugated verb
Afrikaans describes many past events with het and a participle, as in Ek het gister gekom. Khmer can locate an event in the past with a time expression while leaving the main verb without an Afrikaans-style tense ending. The absence of a visibly different past verb does not make the target refer to today.
Preserve gister, verlede maand or another supplied time phrase when it establishes the event's date. Khmer ម្សិលមិញ means yesterday. A translation that retains this information can communicate a past event without matching the Afrikaans auxiliary word for word. Do not add a past marker indiscriminately to every verb in a sequence: keep the actual chronology, including actions that remain planned rather than completed.
Afrikaans spaces are not a guide to Khmer word boundaries
Khmer script uses combining signs and joined consonant structures, and its spacing does not reproduce the Afrikaans convention of separating every word. A continuous-looking run of text can contain several words. Inserting a space after each visible cluster may divide an expression incorrectly rather than make it easier for a Khmer reader.
Keep the produced character sequence when copying a sentence into a message. If a mark appears displaced, check the font and rendering before deleting it. A vowel sign may be displayed around its consonant even though the stored characters follow their own order. Reference strings written in Latin letters should still remain exact; changing the surrounding script does not translate or renumber a booking code.
