From Afrikaans word order to Estonian case choices

A preposition may become a noun ending

Afrikaans distinguishes being “in die huis” from going “na die huis” through separate words. Estonian can express the corresponding interior location as “majas” and movement into the house as “majja”. These are related forms of maja, not unrelated place names. Read the Afrikaans motion verb and destination together before selecting the Estonian form.

An instruction to wait inside is not the same as an instruction to enter. Replacing each Afrikaans preposition with a fixed Estonian word would miss the way the target encodes this distinction. Conversely, not every Afrikaans na should be forced into the same case ending: a recipient, a destination and something happening after an event are different relationships.

A book can change form without becoming a different book

Afrikaans “Ek lees die boek” does not itself settle whether the whole book is being read to completion. An Estonian reading construction may use the partitive “raamatut”. Forms such as raamatu can participate in total-object constructions when the clause supports that interpretation. The target choice involves the event, not merely whether Afrikaans used die.

The Estonian language institute explains that object choice depends on the verb and its construction as well as completeness. Do not apply a shortcut saying every completed event has one object form. If an Afrikaans sentence means the reader finished the book, retain the completion explicitly in the input; a sentence merely reporting some reading leaves a different interpretation available.

Afrikaans nie does not need a twin in Estonian

Afrikaans commonly distributes negative material across a clause. Estonian negation has its own structure, and an Afrikaans final nie is not an instruction to append another negative after the Estonian sentence. Identify what is denied before rebuilding the clause: an action not occurring and a person not being present need not use identical target wording.

This also affects the object. Estonian negative clauses normally select a partitive object where an affirmative construction might have allowed a total object. Turning an Afrikaans positive sentence into a negative can therefore require changing more than one target word. A saved positive translation cannot always be negated by inserting a single standalone equivalent of nie.

Gender can disappear while person remains

Afrikaans hy and sy distinguish a male and female referent in ordinary third-person singular use. Estonian tema, often shortened to ta, does not carry that distinction. A target sentence can remain accurate without adding a word specifying gender, provided the intended person remains clear from the passage.

Possessive Afrikaans sy needs special attention because it is not simply the same grammatical item as subject sy. Resolve the phrase before selecting an Estonian pronoun or genitive construction. The absence of grammatical gender in the target does not excuse losing ownership or confusing the owner with the person acting. Follow the roles through the complete Afrikaans clause, then let the Estonian forms express those roles in their own way.
