Afrikaans quantities and answers in Simplified Chinese

A numbered noun can require a classifier

Afrikaans “drie boeke” can be Simplified Chinese “三本书”. The character 本 is a classifier used for books in this construction, not an extra object being counted. Afrikaans can place its numeral directly before a plural noun, while the Chinese phrase organises the quantity differently.

This matters when translating a shopping request or list. A classifier appropriate to a book is not automatically suitable for a bottle or a vehicle. Identify what is counted and whether the source refers to individual objects or a measured quantity. Translating each Afrikaans numeral and noun correctly can still leave an incomplete Chinese quantity phrase if the relationship between them is ignored.

Tea and its container are different countable things

Afrikaans “’n koppie tee” can be “一杯茶”. The target measures the drink through a cup. A request for an empty cup, however, counts the container itself and can require another construction. The same Afrikaans noun koppie can participate in both descriptions, but the intended purchase is different.

For a café message, decide whether the speaker wants the beverage, the vessel or a particular serving size. A numeral followed by a familiar classifier does not independently reveal which meaning was intended. Keep the complete noun phrase in the source rather than translating the container word separately and hoping the target reader supplies the drink. The target’s shorter form can preserve a clear request without copying every source article.

Ja and nee depend on the question

Chinese answers often repeat the relevant verb or predicate instead of using one universal equivalent of Afrikaans ja or nee. A reply confirming an identity and a reply confirming a previous travel experience need not begin with the same expression. Read the question before translating the answer.

This is particularly important for a chat message containing only nee. Without the preceding turn, the target may not reveal whether the speaker denies having something, denies an action or refuses a proposal. Preserve that distinction where the conversation supplies it. Adding a target form associated with identity to every negative answer can turn a natural Afrikaans response into an awkward or misleading Chinese reply.

A word for experience does not simply replace het

The pattern “去过” can describe having been somewhere. It concerns experience, rather than serving as a universal replacement for Afrikaans het plus a participle. A source question about whether someone has ever visited a place differs from a report of one specific journey.

Keep that distinction when translating travel messages. Whether an event happened yesterday, happened repeatedly or forms part of a person’s experience can affect the target construction. The Simplified script choice also does not identify Cantonese or a Literary Chinese register: the examples here follow modern Mandarin teaching patterns. Preserve the selected script consistently, but judge the grammar through the event and question being communicated rather than through character appearance alone.
