Afrikaans ideas in Literary Chinese require more than shorter wording

Choose a literary purpose before compressing the sentence

The target option is Literary Chinese. It should not be treated as ordinary contemporary Chinese with a few words deleted. An Afrikaans dedication, maxim or short literary passage may suit a literary rendering, whereas a practical instruction full of modern administrative detail needs careful treatment of reference and terminology.

Decide what the reader is meant to understand before asking the target to sound concise. Removing repeated nouns can be natural when their referents remain obvious, but deleting the only clue to who acts changes the message. Afrikaans normally prints person and other grammatical information more explicitly in separate words. A short Literary Chinese result is not automatically better merely because it uses fewer characters.

Se does not exhaust the uses of 之

Afrikaans possessive constructions using se may sometimes call for a Chinese linking construction, but “之” has several grammatical functions in classical texts. It can participate in subordination or stand in pronominal relationships. It is therefore unsafe to replace every instance with one Afrikaans possessive equivalent, or to insert it wherever the source happens to show se.

For an Afrikaans-to-Literary-Chinese rendering, identify the relationship between phrases first. Is one noun an owner, is a clause being made into a nominal expression, or does a later element refer back to an earlier participant? Those are different tasks. A familiar character can still perform a different job from the one a saved example illustrated.

An Afrikaans negative needs its actual scope

The compact expression “不知” means not knowing. It can express a negative predicate without reproducing Afrikaans’s distributed nie pattern. A source clause such as a statement of not knowing should preserve the denial, not its exact number of separately printed markers.

However, knowing who is ignorant still matters. A brief literary clause may rely on an established subject, while an isolated Afrikaans sentence states the subject explicitly. Do not omit that participant unless the surrounding target text supports the reference. Negating the action of reporting and reporting a negative assertion also have different scopes; brevity cannot substitute for deciding which proposition the source denies.

Some words change grammatical jobs

The character “者” can help form a nominal expression, roughly identifying the one who performs an activity in a suitable construction. That function differs from mechanically translating an Afrikaans noun suffix. Classical Chinese words can shift grammatical roles more freely than a rigid word-for-word mapping suggests.

When translating an Afrikaans description of a person who does something, distinguish the action itself from the person defined by it. Similarly, a source adjective may participate in a target predicate without an Afrikaans-style copular sequence. Read the completed literary sentence for who or what is being described, not just for the presence of equivalent vocabulary. The cited teaching materials document classical patterns; applying them to a new Afrikaans message still requires an explicit decision about reference, purpose and intended meaning rather than a claim that every concise output imitates an ancient author.
