Afrikaans is and het in Cantonese Traditional messages

Is can locate rather than identify

Afrikaans “Die motor is buite” can be Cantonese “架車喺出便。” The target uses a location construction with 喺. Afrikaans is serves more than one grammatical purpose, and the equivalent in an identity statement is not automatically the form needed for a location.

This matters when translating a practical update about a vehicle or delivery. The object’s whereabouts and its identity answer different questions. A message containing the right noun and a familiar copular form can still fail to tell the reader where the object is. Identify the source’s spatial claim before choosing the target predicate instead of translating is independently from the rest of the clause.

An Afrikaans past auxiliary does not demand 咗

Cantonese 咗 marks a completed viewpoint in relevant constructions, but it is not a universal equivalent of Afrikaans het plus a participle. Cantonese “我飲咗水。” can report that the speaker drank water. The time and relevance of the event still depend on the wider message.

Afrikaans can describe past habits, background activity and completed events through constructions that need different Cantonese treatment. Do not append 咗 to every verb in a narrative simply to show that the source is talking about yesterday. First establish which activities reached completion, which were unfolding and how the events relate. The target’s aspectual choices do not reproduce Afrikaans auxiliaries one for one.

Besig om makes an ongoing activity explicit

Afrikaans “Ek is besig om water te drink” can be “我飲緊水。” The marker 緊 follows the action verb and expresses an ongoing activity. The short target clause carries information that Afrikaans spreads across several words, so its compactness is not itself an omission.

The marker does not independently mean that the action occurs now. In a past-time setting, the corresponding English explanation would be was drinking, and an Afrikaans past progressive should retain that frame. Keep explicit source time expressions attached to their events. A remembered target phrase for an activity happening now cannot be reused unchanged as a complete past narrative merely because the verb and object are identical.

Traditional characters do not determine every register choice

The target is Cantonese written with Traditional characters. That script choice is separate from whether a message adopts conversational Cantonese or a more formal written style. An Afrikaans chat reply and an official notice can need different wording even when they convey similar facts.

Likewise, the third-person pronoun 佢 does not distinguish Afrikaans hy and subject sy. The reference should be retained without automatically inserting a gender description. Check who the pronoun points to, then assess how the full utterance addresses its reader. Sentence-final particles can contribute stance or interactional meaning, so adding a familiar particle solely to make a message look more Cantonese can change a neutral report into something more emphatic or interrogative. Preserve the Afrikaans speech act as well as its factual content.
