Afrikaans to Bodo: distinguish the food and rebuild the sentence

Rys needs the meal context

Afrikaans rys can name rice in several practical settings. The Bodo primer gives ओंखाम for cooked rice. A shopping request for uncooked rice and an invitation to eat cooked rice are not the same lexical task. Give the translator the complete food context instead of entering an isolated ingredient label and assuming every target form is interchangeable.

For a meal message, state whether the rice is already cooked, still needs preparation, or is being purchased. These details belong to the meaning, rather than optional explanation after translation. A target word that names a prepared food can be wrong in an otherwise fluent inventory or shopping list.

Do not copy Afrikaans verb placement

Bodo commonly follows a subject–object–verb pattern in its grammatical description. Afrikaans has its own main-clause and subordinate-clause patterns, with auxiliaries and participles distributed according to Afrikaans grammar. A translated Bodo clause should therefore not be rearranged to imitate the place where an Afrikaans finite verb appears.

This is particularly relevant to a source containing temporal het and a participle. Interpret the completed event first, including its actor and affected object, then let the target clause express it. Moving the target verb toward an Afrikaans-looking position can disconnect it from material that belongs before it in the Bodo construction.

A dictionary noun is only a starting point

The primer’s आखाइ, hand, and थाइजौ, mango, are short examples of Bodo vocabulary in Devanagari. They demonstrate why translating means selecting words and grammar, not transliterating Afrikaans letters. A familiar object has its own target name, while the phrase containing it must still express number and sentence role.

For an instruction involving someone’s hand, make the action and the affected person clear. For a request involving mangoes, specify whether the source counts fruit or describes a kind of food. Do not assume that a dictionary headword inserted into an otherwise Afrikaans-shaped phrase supplies the target’s full grammatical relationship.

Keep Bodo distinct from another Devanagari language

Bodo uses Devanagari in the cited primer, but its grammar and vocabulary are not Hindi merely because the script is shared. Keep Bodo selected when revising an Afrikaans source. Replacing an unfamiliar target expression with a Hindi phrase that you recognize would change the language rather than improve the Bodo translation.

Before reusing a sentence, compare the food sense, event completion, and actor–object relationship with the Afrikaans original. Preserve the Devanagari characters and marks when copying. For a short practical message, these checks help distinguish a usable Bodo instruction from a collection of correctly spelled words that still reflects the wrong food state or an imported source word order.
